When a new expansion is passed, Rivers Casino Des Plaines will be the first gaming facility to reach the maximum number of 2,000 gaming positions in Illinois.
Churchill Downs Inc. (CDI) announced last week that it had filed expansion plans with the City of Des Plaines and the Illinois Gaming Board that would add an estimated 725 gaming positions. The $ 87 million expansion includes a two-story extension with a poker room, additional gaming areas, ballroom events, and a new restaurant.

Rivers Casino is jointly owned by Rush Street Gaming and CDI.
"With this planned expansion, we will be able to offer our guests more entertainment and dining options, additional gaming options and a long-awaited poker room," said CEO Greg Carlin, co-founder of Rush Street Gaming, in a press release. “We have always offered our guests a first-class experience. With the economy reopening, we're excited to raise the bar and bring you an even better experience. "
The extension will be built between the existing casino building and the recently converted parking garage at the north end of the property, the press release said.
A new restaurant and an extended gaming floor for slot machines and table games will be built on the first floor of the extension. The second floor will have a poker room with 24 tables and a 10,000 square foot ballroom for private events and live entertainment. There will also be a slot machine game area on this level.
"Rivers is the most popular casino destination in Illinois. With this addition, we continue to focus on our guests to earn their loyalty," said Corey Wise, senior vice president and general manager of Rivers Casino, in the press release. “We were the first casino to be set up on land to expand our gaming surface. BetRivers was the state's first sportsbook to open, and we brought the state's first mobile sportsbook option to fans. When we're done, we'll be the first casino in Illinois to offer our guests 2,000 slots. "

The expansion will initially include 260 table game positions (70% more) and 439 slot game positions (48% more). This plan will also add 26 game positions to the property in the future. Rivers will pay the state $ 24 million in royalties for gaming positions in June 2021.
The states are looking for ways to increase revenue after the coronavirus pandemic closed casinos in Illinois and across the country last year.
The Illinois Gaming Board has yet to approve the plan. The city of Des Plaines must also approve the expansion, while representatives from Rivers will begin the formal zoning process in late February.
If approved, construction on the new extension can begin this spring and should be completed by spring 2022.
