DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa bettors were managed to set a new record for betting on sports in January, increasing the total betting handle by 42.7% month over month.
The Hawkeye State saw a boom in betting activity following the launch of remote registration for online and mobile sportsbooks. Prior to last month, Iowa residents had to physically sign up at a retail sportsbook before they would partake in mobile betting.
The increase in wagers from mobile sportsbooks shows that Iowa bettors truly embraced the switch to remote registration. More than 80% of total wagers came from mobile sportsbooks.
Iowa Mobile Betting
In total, $149,524,789.11 was wagered on sports in January according to the official IRGC report. Mobile and online betting saw $120,760,377.02 of all wagers.
Retail sportsbooks saw $28,764,412.09 wagered in January, with the Ameristar II Casino Sportsbook seeing the most action at $6,409,441.66.
In terms of sports betting revenue, the Hawkeye State collected $765,672.97 in state taxes from sportsbooks.
One of the biggest reasons for the boom in betting activity, outside of the addition of remote signups for mobile sportsbooks, was Super Bowl betting and betting on the NFL Playoffs.
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year every year and Iowa bettors took to mobile sportsbooks to place their futures bets on the Big Game.
This can explain the increase in activity, and also bodes well for February’s revenue numbers as the Super Bowl took place on February 7 and surely saw even more wagers.
Iowa bettors clearly embrace mobile betting, so it is expected that other sports betting operations will be looking at the success of Iowa’s legal sports betting market and work towards launching in it.
The Hawkeye State is expected to see continued growth this year. The NBA season will be ending just before the Olympics which means there will be nonstop action all year.
